Some of us are total research lovers! Some of use research to help us make choices. At least we know our doctors and healthcare professionals do! And when it comes to making life decisions…like group therapy, we want to know what the research says! Is it worth your time? Will it hurt? Does it actually work?
Look no further as this article will provide some quick insights on what the research has to say about group therapy.
On group therapy types…
DBT (1) and CBT (2) therapy groups are respectively helpful for various anxieties including social anxiety as well as improving psychological resilience and mindfulness. Particularly structured group therapy approaches like these have been found to really be a positive impact on vulnerable populations (3). So if you are really struggling, a structured group experience might be right for you as it can provide you with tangible skills to face your problems and the direction to keep your mental health organized.
On dealing with the big depression feeling…
Group therapy has been found to bring about significant decreases in depressive symptoms as found in baseline versus after treatment inventories taken after treatment (4). In another study it was found that the integration of music in group therapy could further reduce depression symptoms after treatment. The “stress hormone” known as cortisol can be lowered and overall mood can improve with music and shared connection in the group experience (5).
On the economics…
Group therapy is known to be the more cost-effective approach to treatment as it allows for collective treatment (6). This is oftentimes more sustainable for providers to streamline treatment to multiple people at once and ensure care is accessible. If you are worried about accessing proper mental health care and you may not have the financial means, group therapy is a good option as there are often lots of free group therapy services that exist.
The major theme about group therapy is…
Shared experiences are immensely helpful in the healing experience of the therapeutic space. Particularly when people are experiencing things that can feel “unspeakable” or are facing chronic, unique struggles that the general public may not understand, it gives them a voice to feel heard. It also can be an effective space to enhance and develop communication skills, which helps one fortify their connections in and out of the group space (4). As we know, healthy connections with others equals healthier lives. We need each other more than we may realize in this life! We hope this article taps on the logical and emotional brain on the reasons why.
