21 Questions to Ask in a Group Therapy Consultation

You found the perfect group therapy experience! It checks all of the boxes, and you feel like it is exactly what you are looking for in your mental health journey. Now, you scheduled an appointment with the facilitating mental health professional because you want to learn a little more about the group and confirm it would be a good mutual fit. Before joining that consultation call, here are 21 question options to consider asking the mental health professional to ensure the group is really as aligned as you hope it will be.

About the Facilitator(s)

  1. What is your experience and training in facilitating group therapy?
  2. What’s your role during sessions—are you more of a guide, an observer, or actively involved?
  3. How do you ensure a safe and inclusive environment for participants?
  4. How do you manage groups with diverse identities or intersectional experiences?
  5. How do you accommodate participants with varying levels of experience in therapy?
  6. What are some examples of success stories from past groups you’ve led?

About the Intended Group Members

  1. How do you determine if someone is a good fit for the group?
  2. Are there any situations or conditions that might make someone ineligible to join?
  3. Are members expected to provide support to each other during or outside of sessions?
  4. How participatory do you expect group members to be?

Group Logistics

  1.  What materials or preparation do you recommend before the first session?
  2.  Do groups have homework and if so, what are examples of homework assignments?
  3.  How can I access materials referenced and shared during groups if any?
  4.  Is the group accessible for people with disabilities (physical or otherwise)?
  5.  How do you handle cancellations, rescheduling, or holidays affecting sessions?

Goals and Progress Tracking

  1.  What should I do if I feel like I’m not benefiting or connecting with the group?
  2.  How do you recommend group members assess and track their progress? Do you use any formal assessments for this?

When Group Ends

  1.  What resources or referrals do you provide after the group ends?
  2.  Are there opportunities for alumni groups or follow-up sessions?
  3.  Can I transition to individual therapy with you or another provider if needed?
  4.  Based on what I’ve shared about my goals and concerns, do you think this group would be a good fit for me? Why or why not?
